I don't know if I should create a different thread or if this falls within the boundaries of this thread, would anyone here buy one of these machines for themselves?  Would you recommend one of these for a friend or relative for their first pc purchase?

Yeah, I'd buy one.  If for no other reason than to check it out.  I could also find a lot of uses for it too.  Very Happy

The endless talks dealing with its insecurities because it thought someone was always spying on it. ahhh. Miscosoft, I'll miss ya me virus ridden, overpriced, insecure heaping piece of s**t.

I thought about maybe getting one for my wife, (she loves linux and I can't keep her off my machine), but it looks like we'll have to stand in line for one. Not a bad problem really.

You can buy one of these at NewEgg if you don't want to wait for WalMart to get stocked up again.

Never heard of it over here in Europe.

I don't know of any European 'Walmart' kinda company selling Tux-preinstalled boxes.  Maybe something that will pop up here in the future.

It is actually not so hard finding a company that sells Tux-preinstalled boxes here, but they are not as cheap as the $200 you stated here.

Well, not to plug myself or anything - but my Linux desktops start at around $230 - and I know of quite a few other OEMs offering systems around the same price.

Curiosity got the better of me.  I couldn't bring myself to buy something from Wallmart, so I went to the Web site for gOS (http://www.thinkgos.com/) and found that the motherboard and CPU combo (http://www.via.com.tw/en/initiatives/empowered/pc2500_mainboard/index.jsp) was available for about $70.  I've had a few VIA boards, and that's a fairly low price.  Last night, I mounted the board in a compact case (an AOpen H340D at about $55).  I'm still waiting on memory, which should be here soon, and I still have to decide on a hard disk.

Why not get her a 'cool' one?  Not too expensive, does Browsing, Email, runs her server stuff  etc.

http://lwn.net/Articles/256525/ there's quite a choice Mini Koobox, dectop, Zonbu, Koolu, fit pc (super tiny & dual ethernet).
Think the Koobox is the fastest out of those, the Asus EEEppc may come over too cheap, for a gift.

ClubIT is out of the boards, but I'm on the notification list.  I think it would make a good companion for my C3.

Yeah, other than gOS sucking wind, it's been reported to be a pretty good computer.  Smile  And of course since gOS is Linux, you can easily replace it with your favorite flavor.

I've been hanging out at the gOS forums (gOS Official Forum) and even one of the admins
thinks that KDE is better than the beatup version of Enlightenment that's the default for gOS.

Just use Synaptic to install KDE and that's it, nothing hard at all. You can even download some other themes for GDM and select Enlightenment or KDE for
your session.
